Ideal forGarden and Microplants
Calabrese broccoli is part of the 'Brassica' family and small broccoli plants are quick and easy to grow as well as heat and cold resistant. They belong to the cabbage family and therefore give off a cabbage smell as they grow. However their flavour is surprisingly mild.
Scientific research has shown that broccoli microplants are active protectors against certain forms of cancer. Broccoli has the highest concentration of sulforaphane, a compound in the isothiocyanate group of organosulphur compounds and considered the most studied phytonutrient.
Sulforaphane in microplants is 50 times more concentrated per gram than in mature broccoli, and sulforaphane as a phytonutrient is part of the antioxidant family, neutralising free radicals, oxygen molecules that play an important role in triggering diseases such as osteoporosis, cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer's disease. Sulforaphane also slows down the ageing process.
How can we eat them?
Calabrese broccoli microplants are best eaten raw or steamed, by burning the broccoli sprouts and microplants will lose a significant amount of their nutrients, for example by burning the amount of sulforaphane in broccoli decreases 10 times.
Store the seeds in a cool, airy place with a temperature between 8° and 20° C, away from bad weather, changes in humidity and direct sunlight.
